Education, Culture and Change in South Africa
Examine the power of forgiveness, change and reconciliation, as well as participate in service learning activities in South African schools, communities and empowerment projects.
This course provides experiences for students to increase their cultural awareness and knowledge, cultural empathy and better understand their cultural identity. Through lived experiences, service learning and self-reflection while in South Africa, participants challenge beliefs and assumptions, and develop critical thinking skills as part of their development of personal and professional competence.
Taught for the last 15 years by Dr. Darren Clarke, GSE Senior Director of Strategic Alliances and Outreach, this hybrid course is open to all Rutgers and non-Rutgers grad students, alumni, educators, and professionals in all fields. Coursework is divided into two parts: (1) Pre-trip coursework online & training in Blogging; (2) A two-week trip abroad in South Africa.
This graduate course may fulfill an elective of a degree program, provided the student's academic advisor gives the approval. All students must apply via the RU Study Abroad website.
Application deadline is March 1st, 2017, however early decision for admission and scholarships is being made now.
