iSTEM Summer Academy
iSTEM and Leadership Summer Academies are now closed. Please check back early next year for information about Summer 2018.
The iSTEM Academy (July 16-22, 2017) is an integrated STEM program providing High Schools Students an opportunity to solve a real-world multi-disciplinary problem from solution concept to prototype. Participants will work with project champions (Rutgers faculty and other experts) as they share their passion and research and support teams in solving the problem.
- Work with project champions (Rutgers faculty and other experts) as they share their passion and research and support you in solving the problem.
- Take a tour, with the project champions, to help provide context and define the problem.
- Work in the RU MakerSpace to help with prototyping your solution.
CHOOSE FROM THREE PROBLEMS TO SOLVE
The theme for our first iSTEM Academy is the environment. Participants will work in teams to solve their chosen problem. Each team will construct (with access to the Rutgers Makerspace) a prototype of their solution to be presented to all the project champions on the final day of the academy.
Farm Fresh Problem
Project Champion: Dr. Aynei, Department of Plant Biology and Pathology
Most vegetables only stay fresh for about 3 days. How might we package vegetables to keep them fresh for a week to increase distribution?
Oyster Restoration Problem
Project Champion: Dr. Ravit, Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences
Oysters no longer have a sustainable population in the NY/NJ harbor. How might we reintroduce them to the local waters.
Solar Energy Problem
Project Champion: Rick Anderson, Director of Virtual Worlds and Co-Founder of the Rutgers Makerspace
The NJ solar energy grid is not efficient. How might we optimize it?
